Over the past 25 years, Lucky Cat’s dedicated volunteers and generous donors have transformed the lives of community cats and improved local communities. Through spay/neuter efforts and ongoing care, Lucky Cats helps halt the breeding cycle and significantly reduces shelter euthanasia rates. By partnering with local rescue groups, kittens and friendly unowned cats identified through TNR are removed for adoption whenever possible. "By ending the continuous breeding cycle, we’re keeping unwanted cats and kittens out of the shelters. Euthanasia in shelters is the number one cause of death for community cats in NC,” shared Lucky Cats Executive Director Robin Byrd.

In 2024, Lucky Cats adopted a new targeted outreach approach, conducting spay/neuter clinics in high-density areas of unowned cats and kittens through collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Welch's Community Pets Mobile Veterinary Clinic. This strategy addresses the areas most in need of TNR with an efficient approach facilitated by Lucky Cats.

Most recently, this approach has benefited Mooresville’s Historic Mill Village, thanks to an anonymous $10,000 donation, passionate volunteers, and Lucky Cat supporters Michal Bay and Yvonne Fehr of Merino Mill, who graciously offered the site for the high-volume clinics. The success of these clinics depends on community generosity and hands-on volunteers. Additional volunteers are needed for upcoming clinics for trapping and on clinic days. Lucky Cat founder and president Abigail Jennings reflected, “What began in an effort to help a few cats 25 years ago has grown into a movement that is reshaping community cat welfare and improving cats’ lives. Since launching Lucky Cats, we have helped more than 10,000 cats become Lucky Cats across the Lake Norman region and Lenoir County region. In 2024 alone, we assisted over 1,000 cats. Each spay/neuter prevents countless future generations, transforming a community cat into a Lucky Cat — loved and cared for. We hope our supporters will join us at this milestone event.”

Treasures on the Lake owner Kimball Lawrence graciously provided his expertise in the assessment and descriptions of donated treasures.  Treasures on the Lake is a boutique jewelry retailer specializing in estate jewelry in Cornelius.  Lucky Cats thanks presenting fête sponsors: Treasures on the Lake, Lake Norman Realty, HEARTS Collaborative, and Giving with Grace. 100% of all proceeds for this event will have a direct impact on improving the lives of community cats in our region.

The event will feature items priced below estate sale values, along with a silent auction featuring curated treasures, fine jewelry, and event tickets for Biltmore House and the Carolina Panthers. “We are grateful to our sponsors, dedicated volunteers, and donors, and hope everyone will join us in celebrating our 25th anniversary and help us spay-it-forward for community cats,” said Jennings.

Lucky Cats Changing Lives One Cat at a Time

Mayo has a life changed for the better, now living the good life as a Lucky Cat.

MAYO

May is the last cat from a massive colony at one family's home in Statesville. They had been feeding without fixing, which had gotten out of control. A success story thanks to our supporters, volunteers, and rescue partners.

CHARLIE

Charlie had shown up at a residence whose owners had worked with us for well over a year to TNR a massive number of cats on their property. They reported that this is the first year without kittens! Charlie showed up, obviously dumped. He was very friendly, but was attacked by the other cats. Lucky Cats assisted with removing Charlie for adoption.

HENRY

Henry was recently trapped at a low-income government housing apartment complex in Mooresville, and was placed for adoption as he was quite friendly.

KINSTON JAN. '25

Our second Spay-A-Thon in Kinston started 2025 off with a two-day successful community cat clinic and spayed/neutered 100 cats! Several were friendly and placed with rescue partners. Two cats had CH, a neurological disorder; one passed away, but one survived! She was recently adopted as a special-needs kitten, and she is truly a Lucky Cat. She wouldn't have likely lived without Lucky Cats' intervention.

ORIANNE

TNR'd in Mooresville with Lucky Cats. She went to our adoption partner and now has and now has a wonderful home! LIFE CHANGED for this Lucky Cat!

PETAL & CASH

Petal was part of a colony of cats that were TNR'd in an impoverished area teeming with drug dealers. 13 cats were trapped at that site, 10 of which were pregnant females! Petal was one of those pregnant females. She had already had multiple litters there. Cash was one of the males. LIVES DRAMATICALLY ALTERED for these Lucky Cats!

Thank you for your support of Lucky Cats. These are only a few of the many stories and lives we transform daily thanks to your generosity and our dedicated volunteers.
